People in a safe situation lose themselves easily.Suffering a slight setback and something rough at times can arouse our conscience , and also sprout the roots of goodness at heart.

To become a real lion, little lion must be thrown down from a cliff by his father, and suffer backset or overcome obstacles.

When we live in safety, we lose easily. If sometimes there are frustrations and bumpy roads in our life, the conscience can be awaken and it will nurture our goodness.

When we are safe, we lose our way easily. Sometimes even a small setback or misfortune will awaken our conscience and nuture our kindness.

To 康:

1. Is your translation a kind of "substitute" or "conversion"? There are 3 basic methods for translating: equivalence, substitute and conversion. Your translation looks like "substitution."

2. But, in the source text, it purports -- we must accept occasional setbacks, because they can be helpful to our lives.

3. Your "sustitution" seems not respond to the above purport.

4. By the way, is it true that the father lion will throw down his cub? or it's just a metaphor?

To Yu En,

1. Not bad.

2. But, try not to translate this kind of aphorism with strong cultural flavor in this way. Instead, you should have tried to use "substitute" or "conversion" way to translate.

3. Besides, please do not use "sprout the roots of goodness." You may go to the internet to check if there are many uses there.

We lose our way easily when life is safe and sound. Occasionally, some setback or misfortune can awaken our conscience and nurture the seeds of goodness.

To Carol,

1. "When we are safe," is not a good use here. Try to find out the difference between safe and peace and ease.

2. "Kindness" is no better than "goodness" in this context. See the following definition for 'kind':
1. Of a friendly, generous, or warm-hearted nature.
2. Showing sympathy or understanding; charitable: a kind word.
3. Humane; considerate: kind to animals.
4. Forbearing; tolerant: Our neighbor was very kind about the window we broke.
5. Generous; liberal: kind words of praise.
6. Agreeable; beneficial: a dry climate kind to asthmatics.

To Jo,
1. I don't think you need to use "if."

2. "nurture our goodness" is a good use.

If sometimes there are frustrations and bumpy roads in our life, the conscience can be awaken...

SOMETIMES, FRUSTRATIONS AND SETBACKS IN OUR LIVES CAN VIRTUALLY AWAKEN OUR CONSCIENCE...

...THEY WILL NURTURE OUR GOODNESS.

wonderwan 提到...

To Eva,
1. "When they are in safety." is not very good translation.

When we translate, we can not just look at the Chinese words - 平安, rather we have to look at the context - 順境忠義使人迷失.

WHEN WE LIVE IN EASE (COMFORT), IT IS EASY FOR US TO LOSE OURSELVES.

2. The following is wrong:
Sometimes it can have some setbacks and full of frustrations but recall our conscience

SOMETIMES, SETBACKS AND FRUSTRATIONS CAN HELP US RECALL OUR CONSCIENCE...

To Mary,

Pretty good!

But,
"occasional setbacks and misfortunes are..." sounds better.

To Christy,

1. "Safe" is not a good use here. In this aphorism, it doesn't necessarily mean 安全 or 平安, rather, it implies 安逸或平順.

WHEN YOU LIVE IN EASE (COMFORT, PEACE)...

2. "Get something wrong" means 弄錯某事. I don't think it can fit into this context here.
